Learning new things
My son started snowboarding at 8 or 9 years old. It looked like fun. So, I took it up too. What was most remarkable and exciting was to feel new synapses connecting in my brain and with my body. In my youth, learning new things was a constant. At 40 something, I had forgotten how that felt. Hurling myself down a slope, there was no turning back. What became apparent was that learning new skills benefits one’s health. Yes, it felt good but sometimes NOT. There was “post hole” sweating out of a dead end of deep snow. There were bruises and, of course, mistakes and embarrassments. At least there weren’t broken bones. Well, publishing is my latest new thing to learn. And though it’s not as physical as snowboarding, I feel it in my body (sometimes as a slight nausea). “WHAT am I doing?!” I’m feeding new synapses. I’m staying curious. This is good for my health.
